Cinnamon helps with blood sugar

Good news for diabetics in New Scientist:

Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day significantly reduces blood sugar levels in diabetics, a new study has found. The effect, which can be produced even by soaking a cinnamon stick your tea, could also benefit millions of non-diabetics who have blood sugar problem but are unaware of it.

No, that doesn't give you license to pig out on pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. Way too much sugar and other crap. You can also get cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) in a powder form and add it to just about anything you like!

Special thanks to Julius from Outwardly Normal for the link!

Ken,

Any good and well-stocked herb store should have bulk spices and herbs. You'll probably have to buy at least an ounce. Buy some capsules and fill them yourself to save money!

I live where we have many MAJOR vitamin and herb shops. I can't find any that have cinnamon capsules. As a matter of fact, the manager of one told me that until it is in large demand, they probably won't get it. That came from a large chain! What gives? I don't prefer to buy it on line but if that is my only choice what can I do.

Suan,

First, MAJOR vitamin shops (Hi-Health, GNC) are not likely to carry botanical remedies I would use. They make their money on selling bottles of wonders.

Find yourself a whole or natural foods store. They usually have a good bulk herb section. Of course, you'll need to fill your own capsules. And national chains? Forget special ordering. Not for a small order like that. You'll have better luck at small independents.

I know you don't prefer to buy online, but I found quite a few people advertising cinnamon capsules on Google. Might be your only option if you can't find it locally...

I use cinnamon from the grocery store. Believe it or not, it taste quite pleasant and I like it. The only problem is that it is quite "dusty" so I always have a glass of something to drink before I place it in my mouth, then drink right away. I really enjoy the taste and look forward to taking it in the morning and in the evening.

Another thing, try toasting bread, butter it, cinnamon it, and then put honey on it. It not only tastes great, but the honey is a natural anti-bacterial so you get a double dose of health.

I have quit the Glucofose (SP ? sorry) and my blood sugar levels are staying in the 120 range. Please contact me if you have any experiences to share.

Thanks,

Rick

I found this article and I followed her advice and to my surprise it really worked. I went to Akin's (the health food store) and purchased the supplies. I bought the cinnamon from Walmart (2 for $1). I took about three pills that I made and it gave me so much energy when I worked out it was unbelievable. It lowers my blood sugars significantly.

US researchers indicate that cinnamon may help increase insulin sensitivity, which is helpful for insulin-resistant PCOS sufferers. They say to add it to your food. I tried this, it's gross, but I did find a cheap solution. I went to my local health food store and got empty pill capsules. They have a little pill maker thing similar to those that pharmacists use. The recommended dosage is one teaspoon, which is about four "00" sized (look like normal pharmaceutical sized pills) cinnamon pills. The link to the article is below. I got my pill capsules at Akin's, the whole shebang cost me less than 20 bucks, and less than 5 per month to maintain.

I got the normal store brand cinnamon and it works fine. Nothing fancy. I feel a lot less hungry and tons more energized. Good luck, let me know if it works for you.

I just put a tablespoon of ground cinnamon in the coffee filter with the decaf and brewed 6 cups. Good flavor and should provide some of the benefit.

I couldn' find capsules either and a time to eat it straight out of the bottle never seemed to come up. So I make cappucino and sprinle a lot of cinnamon on the white froth. I am type 2 diabetic and my blood sugar has gone down by 15% mornings after days in whcih I drink two cups!

Viable Herbal Solutions has Cinnamon capsules available in 30-cap, 60-cap, and 350-cap bottles. They make their product fresh for each purchase order recieved, and allow the buyer to select either gelatin, vegetable, or kosher caps for their purchase.

They also have a very extensive amount of herbal information throughout their website, and an extensive list of encapsulated herbs.
