Several months ago I posted some articles from the Holistic Health Phreak. While I've been on hiatus, he's been busy posting again. This morning, I got caught up on his blog and found a great post discussing holistic health and western insurance practices-- and mindsets.
I've struggled with the same questions. Completely abandon insurance all together (since I only see other holistic practitioners, and insurance covers none of them) and put my weekly contribution into a savings fund, or do I keep insurance just to be "safe". If I were in a car wreck and needed hospitalization, the costs would be outrageous if insurance were not there to help me. But then again, how much could I save if I were no longer paying into my plan?
I'm off to do some math. I'll report back soon.

In regard to your comments about Western health insurance, let me also refer you to a much earlier post on my blog where I give the details of what my wife and I have set up for ourselves.

Also, I encourage you to check out a book that provides a lot of research into the high-deductible health insurance and how it will change things in holistic health.

I liked this book so much I kept reading all night until I finished it (and it's not short!). Don't be put off by its multi-level marketing "look," it is not about that.
Finally, let me tell you that we switched to Fortis Insurance, who are the best for high-deductible rates.
There may be other stuff in my blog on this topic, but you'd have to search around for it. It's been on my mind a lot lately.
Regarding this subject, perhaps you have some suggestions for me, here is my question:
I have a diagnosis of an auto-immune disease (Sjogren's Syndrome) and my husband had colon cancer almost 6 years ago. We have been able to manage our health beautifully with holistic/alternative modalities, but are considered "uninsurable"...or at least we can't afford the insurance we CAN get. He is self employed and I work part time. My fantasy is to find an insurance company who would insure us against catastrophe...we can pay for the day to day stuff. Seems like people who are willing to take responsibility for their health and are actively pursuing a healthy lifestyle should be insurable at a reasonable amount. The last quote we got was nearly $500/mo...more than we can manage...any ideas?
Thanks!
~Katherine
There are some companies out there for health insurance that are reasonable. All I can recommend it to look. You may have to get 30 different quotes, but one is going to be in the price range you can afford. Also, find an agent that you can trust. Make sure you only have coverages you need, not ones that you dont just so the premium is higher. It actually took me about 30 times to find an insurance company in pittsburgh that was right for me.
